How to Choose the Right Roofer: Licenses, Insurance, and Reviews Explained

Hiring a roofer is a big choice. Your roof protects your home from rain, heat, wind, and storms. If the job is done the wrong way, it can cause leaks, damage, and costly repairs. The good news is that choosing the right roofer is easier when you know what to look for. Three things matter most: licenses, insurance, and reviews.

    Check for the Right License

A license shows that a roofer meets basic rules in your state or local area. In many places, roofers must be licensed to do roofing work legally. A license can also mean the roofer knows building codes and follows safety rules.

When you talk to a roofer, ask for their license number. A reliable company will share it without a problem. If you can, look it up on your local licensing website to make sure it is active. If a roofer says a license is “not needed,” be careful. Even in places where a license is not required, a professional roofer should still have clear business details and proper training.

    Make Sure They Have Insurance

Insurance is not optional. It is a must. There are two main types to ask about: liability insurance and workers’ compensation.

Liability insurance helps pay for damage to your home if something goes wrong during the job. Workers’ compensation helps pay for injuries if a worker gets hurt on your property. If a roofer does not have workers’ compensation, you could be responsible for medical costs.

Ask for proof of insurance, not just a promise. A good roofer can provide a current insurance certificate. If they avoid the question or give unclear answers, that is a warning sign.

    Read Reviews the Right Way

Online reviews can help, but read them carefully. Look for patterns, not just one or two comments. If many people mention good communication, clean work areas, and jobs finished on time, that is a good sign. If you see repeated complaints about leaks, missed visits, or surprise charges, take them seriously.

Also, notice how the roofer responds to negative reviews. A calm, respectful reply can show they care about customers. No company is perfect, but how they handle problems matters.

Choose a Roofer You Can Trust
