Standing water in your sink or shower can quickly turn into a frustrating situation. Clogged drains are a common issue, but the good news is there are quick and effective ways to tackle them.

Before you reach for the phone to call a plumber, let’s take a look at some of the fastest DIY ways to clear stubborn drains.

    1. The Baking Soda and Vinegar Method

This classic combination is a go-to for many homeowners. Start by pouring a pot of hot water down the drain. Next, add a half cup of baking soda, followed by an equal amount of vinegar.

Cover the drain with a plug, let it sit for 20–30 minutes, then flush with hot water again. The fizzing reaction helps break down debris, clearing minor clogs quickly.

Pro tip = Avoid using this method on metallic pipes, as baking soda can corrode their surface over time.

    2. Use a Drain Snake or Wire Hanger

For clogs caused by hair or debris near the surface, a drain snake or a straightened wire hanger can work wonders.

Insert the tool into the drain and carefully fish out the blockage. This method is especially effective for shower or bathroom sink clogs caused by hair buildup.

    3. Try a Wet/Dry Vacuum

If you have a wet/dry vacuum, it can be a powerful ally. Set the vacuum to “wet” mode and create a tight seal between the vacuum nozzle and the drain. Turn it on to either suck out the obstruction or push it through the pipe.

    4. Flush with Hot Water and Salt

If you are dealing with a grease-related clog in your kitchen, hot water and salt can help. Pour a half cup of salt down the drain, followed by a pot of hot water. The abrasive nature of salt helps scrub the inside of the pipes, while the heat melts grease.

Note: Avoid boiling water if your home has plastic pipes, as it can warp them.

    5. Call the Professionals for Tough Clogs

If these DIY methods don’t work, it might be time to call in the experts. Stubborn clogs can be deep in your plumbing system, requiring professional-grade equipment to resolve the issue safely and effectively.

Don’t Let Clogs Slow You Down

Tackling a clogged drain doesn’t have to be a hassle. By trying these quick solutions, you can often clear the blockage and get your water flowing smoothly again.
